Installing an eSIM for Egypt
Just bought an eSIM for Egypt and want to make sure everything’s set up before you fly? This guide walks you through the whole process: when to install, how it works on iPhone and Android, and what to check the moment you land in Cairo, Hurghada or Luxor.
With an eSIM there’s no queue at an airport SIM counter on arrival. The profile is already on your phone before you leave home.
When should you install your eSIM?
Install the eSIM at home, over wifi, well before departure. You’ll receive the QR code by email right after purchase. Scan it at a calm moment — that way there’s no time pressure and no expensive mobile data used for the installation itself. Don’t delete the profile afterwards: it simply stays on your device, ready to activate once you’re in Egypt.
The eSIM is data-only. Your own SIM card and phone number stay active, so calls, texts and your bank’s verification codes keep arriving on your usual number — including during your trip through Egypt.
Only got a 4G phone? In Egypt that barely matters. 5G launched nationally on 4 June 2025, but Opensignal, using measurements from the third quarter of 2025, still described 5G in Egypt as a layer added on top of the network rather than the main network. In practice you’ll be on 4G.
Installing the eSIM on iPhone
- Open the confirmation email from Ariya and find the QR code.
- Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM.
- Scan the QR code with the camera, or choose “Enter Details Manually” if scanning doesn’t work.
- Give the new line a recognizable name, such as “Egypt eSIM”.
Installing the eSIM on Android
The principle is the same, but the menu path differs by brand.
- Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Add eSIM.
- Google Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM.
- Scan the QR code or enter the activation code manually.
- Confirm and give the line a name you’ll recognize.
Not sure your phone supports eSIM? Check your phone’s settings or the manufacturer’s website beforehand — most iPhones from the XS onward and recent Samsung and Pixel devices support it.
Arrival checklist for Egypt
Once you land in Cairo, Hurghada or Luxor, run through these steps:
- Turn on the Egypt eSIM line in your settings.
- Turn on data roaming, but only for that eSIM line.
- Check that a network name appears at the top of your screen — Vodafone, Orange or WE — that means you’re connected.
- Leave your own SIM card in your device as usual — no need to remove it.
Bringing your own phone into Egypt
There’s one Egyptian rule that has nothing to do with your eSIM but everything to do with the handset itself. The exceptional customs exemption for a mobile phone carried in by a passenger was annulled by the regulator, NTRA, effective 12:00 noon on Wednesday 21 January 2026. A 90-day grace period counted from the date the phone was activated applies, and the exemption continues to apply to tourists for 90 days. The full explanation, with sources, is on the coverage and networks page.
Common issues
- No network after landing? Toggle airplane mode on and off briefly — that forces a fresh network search.
- QR code won’t scan? Choose “Enter Details Manually” and use the activation code from the confirmation email.
- Not sure the eSIM is active? Go to Settings > Cellular and check that the right line is selected for data.
